My phone number in college was one number different from the radio station. I quit trying to tell people they dialed wrong and would take their song requests. 🤷🏻‍♀️Of course this was in the dark ages when the only way to hear your favorite song was to wait till it was played by the station. 🦖

I can go you one better - In the small town I grew up, we didn't have a switchboard we could direct dial. Not only did we NOT need to dial the area code, we could call anyone in town by dialing the last 5 digits. Example the number is - 867-5309 We only had to dial 7-5309 and the call would go to that person.

We moved to rural Michigan in 1985, and were only able to get a party line, and were unable to get a private line for more than 10 years! We were on the party line with a family with 3 teen girls, and the phone was never available in the evening. After five years with a private line we switched to cell phones. Hard to believe they were still around that late.

When cordless phones started being a thing you could sometimes hear other people's conversations on your handset.

There were not 100 calls going through. When I grew up in the 70’s we were lucky if we had 1 call come in each day. 😂

My dad took years to give up his land line at our house because he had that number since he was a kid and it was only a 4 digit number.

it actually wasn't that long ago that we could call without area codes in Canada, early 2000s I think. I remember it switching and people were pissed because they had to remember/dial 3 extra numbers now 😂

My grandma was a phone operator while she did her schooling to become a nurse and it is so funny to think she was literally physically connecting calls

Fun story my grandparents met through the switchboard. My gran was a switchboard lady for bell Canada and my gramps owned one of the first taxi companies in Newmarket she would ask for the connection when he answered and then switched over the client to my gramps she some how always got my gramps and he really liked her voice as she was an immigrant from England and how kind she was so he took a chance and asked her out she said yes and the rest in history. They dated got married had a son adopted my mum and her sister and he sold his taxi business started Laidlaw school bus company the sold that and bought a coach bus named it Travelways then finally sold that to a company named Can-ar coach.

When I was young, we didn't even have to dial 7 digits, just the last 4. You only had to dial 7 digits for long distance.

They would tell you that number was busy. Also phone numbers started with letters instead of numbers ( ie wa8). Which you would say Warwick 8 and the last four numbers.
