You're right that cultural longevity does not equal moral goodness. Tradition alone is not a justification. But your point is kinda ambiguous like what is the standard by which we judge a practice as "good" or "harmful" ? Without a standard, critique is just preference and i am with u, Just because something is practiced (cultural fact) does not mean it ought to be practiced (moral value). This is Hume's law. Tradition describes what people did, not what they should do. So your point is valid: history is descriptive, not prescriptive. we should Apply our critique universally. If we condemn bad practice in one culture but excuse it in another history (or present) then we are not applying a principle; we are expressing bias. So the point is strongest when paired with intellectual honesty such as critique all cultures, including our own, by the same standard. one last thing, Societies change, but change can be for worse (e.g., rise of totalitarianism, erosion of family, loss of meaning). So we need not just change, but directed change toward what is objectively better. And that requires a moral compass.

I watched a video essay of someone connecting a Korean philosopher, Kendrick Lamar and whiplash in thesis the other day and it really helped contextualize the essence of what cultural exchange really means.
A great example of this is the modern Reform Judaism movement - a bunch of us were like hey I value our cultural identity but a lot of this shit is weird and unnecessary so we’re not making people do it anymore

Whenever white American people talk about cutting off family members who don’t respect you. And then every POC in the comments talks about how they have to continue talking to their family and giving them money cause of “culture”.

Yep. Been saying this for YEARS. People need to understand that culture and religions are SOCIAL CONSTRUCTS and are not magically above criticism. It's not racist or problematic to criticize religions and cultural practices which are pseudoscientific and go against human rights.

I think people, mostly in my experience Americans because they dominate this app for any English speaker, don’t really comprehend culture. They think it’s something other people have and don’t realise that they also conform to culture. The whole “white people have no culture” meme from Americans kinda shows this in my opinion. And that’s where the culture fetishisation/idealisation comes in because they don’t realise the culture they live in has evolved over time and changed plenty.
