Many employees have had terrible work experiences solely because of bad supervisors

I started a new job 3 weeks ago. Supervisor asked for feedback. I advised I needed more training, she took offense, now instead of support I've been demoted to simple tasks. fine. they're paying me the same for less work. her problem, not mine.

When are these companies going to stop giving so much power to their managers/supervisors..?!! One person, who may not like you on a personal level, can ruin your career. Especially if they’re in good with HR. It’s crazy to me that the higher ups don’t think about that. Implement manager/supervisor reviews, done by employees, every quarter. Also, internal promotion processes need to change as well. Internal applicants should provide references just like external applicants and those references, which would be fellow colleagues or other leaders in the company, should be considered. You don’t take the word of one manager and decide based on what they say. They could be lying about the employee, bad or good.

It’s not just a supervisor. Too many legal ‘nets’ laid by corporate attorneys. It is company culture or CEO. If it’s big enough company - you can transfer departments. Company culture breeds toxicity and hiring friends and family. It’s a CEO prob atp. Only CEO trumps legal attorneys.

I worked for this financial institution for over 3 years. Recently, we got new manager and my first one on one meeting, I could tell things won’t be good. 4 weeks later, she messaged me to make myself available in 5 mins and was informed that I will have meeting with her and Hr in 24hrs for performance allegations. I asked to put the allegations in writing before the meeting, to my surprise, she sent me that in 2 mins so she has been preparing while I was not aware. Also we addressed this preforming allegations 2 weeks before and she informed me that it will be good. I just could not see my future there so I resigned. All my colleagues were shocked.

A dear friend of mine from an old job, we had the same supervisor but vastly different experiences. To the point where she was shocked some of the experiences I said I had with that supervisor. Once I left (she’s still there), I was so relieved because that supervisor no longer had control over my career.

when from an absent, unreliable supervisor to a micromanaging supervisor who was told by upper management to make sure they fired as many people as they could.
