@jasondoroughauthor: Prologues are controversial, but the real issue isn’t whether you have one—it’s whether it earns its place. A good prologue adds necessary context, creates tension, or raises questions that pull the reader forward. It might show a key historical event, introduce the villain, or reveal a mystery. But if it’s just background information or worldbuilding, it feels like homework. A strong prologue feels like the beginning of the story, not an explanation of it. #WritingTips #BookTok #WritersOfTikTok #Prologues #WritingCraft
Definitely. I love writing prologues. Mine are all significant past events that give insight into the characters and help readers make sense of the present situation. 2 in 1 🤣 I could make them chapter 1 but they're usually too far in the past. I feel chapter 1 should be in the present and where the main story starts.

GoT imo is one of the greatest prologues. Gives an intro to the world and how it works, and gives a mystery that would frame the entire series going forward.

This prologue was just a couple of pages. It was first person and referred to a crime that happened 50 years ago. I ditched the word, "Prologue" and titled it "Highway 12 Revisited." Next page has a big Chapter One at the top and is in third person. The reader didn't get that it was a prologue until the story began.
