Day 1: June is Dysphagia Awareness Month I knew something was wrong the moment he choked in the hospital. He was swaddled, lying flat. Breastfed. Still brand new. The nurse said “he just swallowed amniotic fluid. It happens to all babies.” But I couldn’t shake the feeling. I actually slept well for a few days afterwards. He was always fussy before bedtime, but a good sleeper. The night before I fell into a sleep so deep, I couldn’t even hear him cry, my mom had to wake me up to care for him. Then the next night, 7 days after he was born, my body just wouldn’t rest. My gut feeling told me to stay alert. I turned off the light and seconds later… He started aspirating! He went cold. Wouldn’t open his eyes. The color drained from his hands and feet. We rushed him to the ER. My world stopped. They got him breathing steady and I saw the color come back. They sent us home. Again. They told me he aspirated on his reflux. But I knew better. The choking spells continued in the car, in his sleep, and even while sitting and playing. He had x ray after x ray because he lungs would sound funny after a spell, but every x ray was clear. I kept going back. I kept asking questions. I kept documenting every episode. I didn’t take “it’s normal” for an answer. Finally, his pediatrician listened. After months of me pushing, Leónis got a swallow study. The results? Dysphagia aka difficulty swallowing safely. They said luckily he was a breastfed baby and his lungs were metabolizing the milk. He now works with a speech pathologist through Children’s Hospital. Hopefully he won’t have to deal with ongoing therapy. But let me tell you he’s THRIVING! He’s strong. Smart. Funny. Curious. And SO loved. June is Dysphagia Awareness Month, but this is more than awareness this is our testimony! And this is how we begin the countdown to ONE. 💙 #singlemom #dysphagia #dysphagiaawareness #firsttimemom #swallowingproblems #advocate
