When a parent refuses to take sides between an abusive spouse/relative and their child, they are choosing the side of their spouse/relative. By refusing to support their child, they’re enabling the other person.

I get so grumpy when people call their kids abusive - nope your child can be violent or aggressive but they can't be abusive. They have zero power. Kids deserve protection. Period.

This!! I won’t date til my kids are adults and can consent to who lives in their space with them. when I get asked why I’m single I just say because I’m not prepared to bring a new partner into our home where my girls may not be comfortable or able to fully express themselves when they are developing and growing up. Relationships come and go but kids get one childhood and I’m not sharing my time with a man over them.. but that’s a hot take apparently.

The problem is the parents who need to understand this don’t/wont because they don’t even really understand what power dynamics are, they conflate it with authority, superiority and autonomy. They don’t believe there is one because “now you’re an adult” their framework for navigating/experiencing relationships isn’t based on mutual understanding and emotional safety, it’s based on rules, scripts, and strict social norms.
