The General Laundry Building is a historic Art Deco landmark located at 2544 St. Peter Street in New Orleans, Louisiana. Built and opened on May 30, 1930, the building was commissioned by Robert Chapoit, president of General Laundry, Cleaners, and Dyers, after a fire destroyed the company’s previous facility. Designed by the Shreveport-based architectural firm Jones, Roessel, Olschner, and Wiener, the building features distinctive Art Deco and Aztec-Mayan influences, geometric tile patterns, terra-cotta details, and elaborate decorative pilasters. During its heyday in the 1930s, the laundry facility was more than an industrial building. It hosted monthly fashion shows featuring fine local fabrics, with elaborate events that included champagne. The facility eventually closed in December 1945 as commercial laundry operations changed and automatic washing machines became increasingly common in American homes. After its closure, the building was occupied by several different organizations, including Baby Services, Royal Crown Cola, the U.S. Postal Service, Dixie Mill Supply, and Southern Scrap Material Co. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and was designated a local city landmark by the Historic District Landmarks Commission in 2023. Today, the historic structure is known for its deteriorating exterior, graffiti, and vegetation growing through parts of the building, making it a distinctive architectural landmark near the Lafitte Greenway. #louisiana #usa🇺🇸
