They were closely connected to other steppe peoples such as the Huns and later the Avars, and played a key role in the formation of early Bulgar identity. Under leaders like Kubrat, they formed Old Great Bulgaria in the 7th century. After its collapse, different Bulgar groups migrated in various directions: some founded the First Bulgarian Empire in the Balkans, while others moved toward the Volga region, contributing to Volga Bulgaria.
