@mjlove103: Give your flock a fresh, living superfood 🌱🐓 Planting wheat seed for your chickens means nutrient-packed wheatgrass anytime boosting egg quality, supporting digestion, and keeping them happily foraging (even when the yard is bare). It’s simple, affordable, and your chickens will LOVE it 💚 #backyardchickens #chickensofinstagram #homesteadlife #urbanhomestead #growyourownfeed
Wheatgrass is also marketed as cat grass for pet owners. I buy mine from tractor supply for my cats, too :)

I planted alfalfa around my coop (my Dad farms and had expired seed I got for free)-once established they can’t scratch it out and is an amazing source of protein for them in the summer months. I save a lot on feed in the summer months for having it.

seeing a few comments and wanted to clear something up. As a REAL chicken owner, they do not eat that. Chickens only eat fruity pebbles. Every REAL chicken farmer noes this

Your chickens are going to get impacted crop. This is not how chickens eat grass. They nibble pieces not long blades

hey so as an actual chicken owner who free ranges her birds in expanses of pasture. CHICKENS LOVE TO EAT WHOLE GRASSES. they will willingly go out of their way to search for choice pieces and eat the entire strand of it.
my birds will not eat chopped mown grasses almost at all. maybe 10% of the pile will be eaten. whole chunks of grasses, chickened, wild lettuce, dandelions, and other stuff that I just cut and give to them tho? theyll eat 90-100% every time.

Genuine question, Have you tried mowing it? That way it is chopped up fine for your chickens, and could save your back a little bit.

How do you plant it? Just till the dirt and throw it down and keep it watered? I need to do something under our trees!

I made a short frame with chicken wire on top to grow wheat and other treats inside the run. The chickens eat the grasses that grow through without scratching up the roots.

Plant a bag of scratch grains and when it’s waist high start snapping off pieces for chickens let it grow again to be chest high and the feed 🙌🏽

I grow mine in an old plastic tray, then just pop the turf out of the tray and toss it into the coop.

I just want to point out like someone else did- long pieces of grass like that is a recipe for an impacted crop. When they eat grass they take the tiniest bits at a time so they can digest it. This way with long pieces, they will swallow it whole and it’ll get all tangled up. I suggest if you’re going to do this to mow it on the highest wheel level on mulch setting so the pieces are tiny. I’d also let it dry a bit before giving it to them a few handfuls a day so it’s not all clumped up because they’ll be taking down clumps at a time if it’s all wet and stuck together. They need a TON of grit available as well. It will cut down on your feed prices with supplementing, so that’s great, just a couple of modifications to make it safer. 😁
