@np_natalie: 🚩 Things that are red flags to me as a PNP that most parents are weirdly chill about: • Toddlers with speech delays. By 12 months, most kids have at least a word or two. By 24 months, we expect ~50 words and two-word phrases. Waiting it out can delay support that makes a big difference. • Water beads in homes with young kids. They look harmless, but when swallowed they expand and can cause serious intestinal blockage — often without obvious symptoms at first. • Excessive screen time. High screen exposure in young kids is linked to delays in language, attention, sleep, and behavior. It adds up more than parents realize. If something feels off, it’s worth asking about. Early attention matters more than waiting to see. Save this for your next well visit.

My kid’s kindergarten teacher said “ we can tell you’re reading to her all the time, so that’s why she’s such a good reader”. No mam. Just loads of screen time with closed captioning!

With my son we did all organic homemade food with no seasonings (no sugar/no salt), no screen time at all minus a 'hey bear,' viewing for like 20 minutes every few days. We read to him daily at least 20ish books (10 in the morning and 10 at bed time - Probs a tad excessive). We tried sign language as well. He is almost 3 and still nonverbal (he is very vocal 😂 and neurospicy). With my daughter she is 10 months, and we are a lottttt more relaxed. She gets screen time whenever (nothing crazy, maybe like an hour a day), she eats whatever we eat (just super modified to smaller pieces). We read maybe like 7ish books to her daily. She can already say mama and Dada with intent. My advice on parenting is do your best, but don't stress yourself sick over it.

My oldest had a speech delay and they kept telling me he was fine… he was fine until he started pre k & that’s when meetings started rolling in for speech.. I knew I wasn’t crazy but birth to 3 swore it was fine..

How would you define excessive screen time for a toddler? I’m talking strictly TV, not iPad or tablets or anything!

I told the pediatrician when my baby turned one that I was worried she wasn't saying any words... and he said wait till she is 18 months old. now she is and its taken me a while to get her in to get at least a consult. I should have trusted my gut and just demanded it earlier. I feel like a failure...

I also cannot stand when parents say “if you don’t have children you don’t know”. I as a teacher have worked with more children than parents will ever be around. I also have my degree in teaching and are around children everyday. I definitely know what is appropriate and what is not developmentally appropriate.

My son wasn’t talking at all by 2. I didn’t stop bugging people until he had regular speech therapy. He had apraxia. We worked every day on his speech for 2 years. Early intervention made all the difference. I knew something was off even while everyone around me said I was over reacting. It still impacts him 20 years later when he stressed. I can’t imagine if we hadn’t gotten help.

As an SLP, I am so grateful to our providers who refer early for delays. We are here to help and I see much better outcomes when we are able to provide support and intervention early! Thanks for sharing this information!!

Why are those eater beads even legal anymore? Especially in items that children are able to get ahold of lile squishies...so scary

Idk we don’t exactly limit screen time and my toddlers both have advanced speech and know a million song lyrics. Granted they are hardly ever ‘locked in’ watching whatever is on the tv but they are playing, listening and learning.

Define screen time. Active watching? It on in any capacity at all?

Most insurance companies/doctors/school districts don’t start treating a speech delay until age 3. You have to fight for it and find alternative solutions before that age. Shout out to Alta Services
