The incident involved a group of four divers who were severely lacking the proper training, qualifications, or even legal clearance to go into the cave system. The female diver pushed beyond her safe recreational limits, became lost in the pitch darkness, ran out of air, and ultimately drowned. Because she sank to an extreme depth of 143 meters, it took 7 days for an elite technical rescue team to successfully find and recover her body. One of the master divers involved in this recovery mission, Han Ting, frequently used this tragedy as a warning for other divers to be more cautious. Heartbreakingly, he lost his life in October 2023 at a nearby cave system while preparing for a new world record attempt.
