@drpriaphd: Dissociation in session gets misread more than almost anything else in trauma work. Quiet, distant, or blunted affect are survival responses. Here’s what I look for and how I respond when I see it. #traumatherapy #dissociation #emdr #traumainformed #clinicalsupervision
I dissociate a lot, and when i do i go completely silent and immobile. I just freeze. My therapist and doctor are used to it so now they just ask “where did you go?” Or “okay you dissociated” or they’ll call my name. They know that i just need some time to come back so they give me the space. If i stay in too long, they try to guide me back. They always make me feel safe and understood which i really appreciate.

My whole life has been being in a dissociative state and no one, unless you know specifically what to look for, you wouldn't even know i'm dissociating. Only one psychologist, the one who diagnosed me with DID noticed during sessions. None of the other therapists and psychologists i've seen have been able to notice. I've become so good at hiding it.

I told my therapist that I wasn't able to think clearly anymore and had a hard time remembering things that were literally just said. (I had let her know before that I had that issue with a previous therapist before where I became more and more just out of it) and she just asked me where I felt that in my body, which I obviously couldn't answer and so then she just moved on and repeated her previous question and that was kinda it? Which is wild because I felt like she was kind of judging the previous therapist for not noticing. But at least the previous therapist didn't know this was a thing for me, this one did and I even told her when I noticed I wasn't able to think clearly anymore.
What is your opinion on this? I really want to know if she handled it right and if not, what I should look for instead. Also, that is a form of dissociation, right?

My therapist notices it before I even do sometimes! She always says "tell me whats going on inside?". Thats when I realize I "left" and I try to bring myself back. Last time she asked and I couldn't really answer so she changed the subject.

my old therapist would talk about me being in shutdown and she would get annoyed, she would also say I should tell her when I am dissociated and I couldnt. I guess it makes me wonder if I am just choosing to be quiet or avoid doing the work but your description is so bang on what would happen for me so idk

My therapist has said multiple times that he's surprised by how matter of fact I speak considering the level of CPTSD I have and the current situation I find myself in. I don't know why this is surprising because this is normal for me. But I would like to understand.

I’ve been trying this w clients recently (thank you!). My worry is that I’m going to be wrong or put them on the spot and embarrass them.
