I visited Himeji Castle not knowing that the site is haunted by spirits that would sometimes show themselves to unsuspecting visitors. One of the content creators here retold her story when she visited this castle and captured a clear footage of apparitions in a form of female ghost wearing a red kimono. The ghost is often spotted in Princess Sen’s chamber — located at the upper levels of the castle — even though according to historical records, the rumored haunting has nothing to do with the Princess Sen (Senhime) herself. The creepy lore and sightings stem from multiple separate legends associated with Princess Sen’s chamber rather than herself which are combined into one mixed story: 1. Okiku’s Well — the murdered servant whose ghost counts plates from the castle’s well 2. Osakabehime — a powerful female yokai living in the castle tower. She is often described as a woman in elaborate court robes who appears only rarely. 3. The hitobashira (“human pillar”) sacrifice — an alleged human sacrifice whose body was buried inside the pillar of the castle so that the spirit could become a protector of the castle.
