as someone who has mental illnesses and disabilities I don't use the r-slur. It is triggering for me and the few times I have seen it used it was derogatory and got angry at me when I told them to stop.

It's still used regularly in a mechanical setting. You can individually find another word but the reality is when you speak to a mechanic, engineer or any professional in that setting you will just be confusing and they probably won't understand until you say it anyway

Had a straight cis girl come outside of our school say "what's up f*ggots", to a much of gay people mind you, and thought it was ok bc she "wasn't saying it in a bad way" and "I'm friends with some of you" (she wasn't really, they were just in the same grade). Like no matter what, if you aren't part of that group, you don't say it. Even if you "aren't being derogatory"

In my personal friend group we don't really care about not saying words. I shared my belief with my close friend and my boyfriend and I feel like a lot of people in my area have the same belief. "at some point you're giving it power" EX "Gypsy Java is an espresso stand that has yummy unique coffee creations and more. Moscow and Pullman." I also understand that these things are definitely triggers and should not be openly said in public, you should also talk to new people before saying those words. (cuss words and up) HOWEVER I think we are going about it wrong. I think as society we just need to genuinely pretend that those words can only be used as jokes!! If you think someone genuinely doesn't know you shouldn't be saying that stuff educate them but otherwise just to laugh really really hard, like make them uncomfortable. Just start thinking about how funny it would be to be so close-minded that you're actually racist or something and just fall on the floor laughing. Double over laughing and point at them. Genuinely imagine how funny it would be if an old person made an inappropriate joke and literally everyone in the store they were in started laughing at them. Imagine the joke goes so hard it spreads across the town, it would be weird that your grandkid laughed in school because you said something inappropriate at the grocery store, you might even be traumatized.
