I just finished it an hour ago. I thought it was a combo of Ballerina Farm and Ruby Frankie (they do have a venn diagram). I did think it lagged in the middle for a bit. To me, the ending redeemed the middle so I gave it 5 stars. Also, I didn’t think Natalie was 1 dimensional. I actually had a *tiny* bit of sympathy. She has been damaged by her upbringing, psychological baggage, and life circumstances. To be clear, SHE WAS ULTIMATELY TERRIBLE. Love this dialogue and now I’ll continue my rabbit hole journey!!

I loved it. I’ve followed Caro for years. Her and her co-host, Katie Gatti Tassin, have a podcast (Diabolical Lies) and they regularly discuss a lot of the socioeconomic and cultural themes in the book. The main character isn’t meant to be likable. There is this constant narrative of an us vs them mentality, and I think it’s so much more nuanced than we think. There are no true winners.

finally found my people!!! i feel so gaslight when i keep seeing the 5stars roll in on fable 😂😂 i’ve finished it yesterday and i’ve had such high expectations for this too. it took me almost half of the book to even be fully gripped by it and i think overall it was okay but just very disappointing

For me, the concept was there but the execution fell flat. The author touched on so many different and interesting topics (children on social media, postpartum depression, Christian nationalism, etc) but not everything was explored in depth. To me that’s what made it fall flat (plus the ending felt rushed)

Yes, as a lit fic fan I expected to love it but the end could have been so much more impactful. I would have liked to see some accountability or self reflection for the main character but the author gave us neither. It felt kind of pointless and the twist didn’t really make sense for her character

I just finished this book and honestly, unlike the idea that the main charecter is one dimensional. I found myself asking “why is natalie like that?” Which changed my perspective of this as a thriller into more mental health… and the idea that when someone needs help.. but its too late or not recognized

personally, I was much more intrigued by Clementine's character. I was unimpressed with the mental health/amnesia thing. I would have enjoyed the book much better had we heard Clementine's pov for the second half/regression to the 19th century. Clementine's POV would be difficult to execute, though, and I don't think Burke's writing demonstrated that level of skill.

I am listening to this on audio because well, I don’t have time to sit and read these days, and besides agreeing to what you said, I also find audio reading insufferable. The sing songy slam poetry open mic night at the bar vibe and the pronunciation of “ma-ma” which seems to be a word used in every sentence… 😝

What did you think about the “twist“? That is what ruined it for me! I was fine until 2/3 in, and then I truly started hating it! Definitely the most disappointing book of the year for me!
