We are building a coop in our yard and I want to eventually use sand, but we have grass right now. Do I just let the chickens eat the grass and break it down before adding sand?

I’m really debating what I want to use. My Chicks are 3 weeks old today and I haven’t decided 😂 I get mulch for free bc my bf owns a tree company. But sand seems better.
