I also have a mentally ill child, nobody prepares you for it. People don't understand that you can't raise them the same as you would other children without those disorders and I live in the south so the amount of phrases basically saying to beat it out of them is harmful and to hear. Discipline isn't something done in the moment out of anger, it should always be a guidance based tool. They can't learn what you don't teach them and a lot of the time it's coupled with learning disabilities. The only reason I'm used to it is because my brother and mother are both mentally ill. I thought my brother's case was a fluke and that my mom's was brought on by her having a stroke in her 30s (completely changed her personality, she refuses to get help or a diagnosis due to her pride). Turned out everything I was told regarding that stuff was severely downplayed, there were more people in my family who were mentally unstable. My heart goes out to the parents, care takers, siblings, grandparents, the child, and everyone else who's in that person's village. I lost my village soon after my child's symptoms started appearing. I love my child and don't regret having her, but I've lost so much due to the mental illness. It's not her fault this happened and it's taken years of different types of therapy to smooth things out for her, it's still a very long road, but I'm so proud of the progress she's made so far 💗

I would never judge parents in this situation. one of the reasons I dont want kids is the possibility this could happen. not something I can handle.

It's really devastating that due to a lot of systematic forces, our society has chosen the nuclear family model over communal parenting, and now parents have to essentially become mini experts when their children have issues. From mental health to children who ended up on the wrong side of the internet or in the wrong friendgroup, parents get very little support, and even less support if they don't have the money for psychologists, medicine, outpatient support, caretakers, etc. Ofc parents need to parent, but leaving them alone to handle everything is so broken no wonder children and parents end up with so much resentment. We really need to develop more communal ways of parenting, it would be beneficial for both the parents and children who both deserve love and support.

My middle son has high functioning autism. Life is so hard. I’ve had so many mental breakdowns and I suffer alone aside from my partner. My older kids hide in their rooms. They don’t want to be around their brother. I miss spending as much time with them. Any time I try and share what life is like, people dismiss me and say he’s 7 he can’t be that bad.. or you’re not being a parent, that’s why he acts like that. It’s very lonely. Every single day is hard.

I asked for genetic testing and was denied in the USA. This was well before I got pregnant. Our son was born a carrier of cystic fibrosis. It could've been SO much worse, we know. We tried to get help... please include genetic testing as a normal, essential part of pregnancy.
