🪂 He had completed more than 7,000 skydives. Jump number 7,001 was supposed to be routine. In December 2006, experienced skydiving instructor Michael Holmes took off for a jump near Lake Taupo, New Zealand. What followed became one of the most astonishing survival stories ever captured on camera. Shortly after deployment, Holmes’ main parachute reportedly malfunctioned and became tangled, sending him into a violent spin. As the ground rushed closer, he attempted to deploy his reserve parachute. But the reserve also failed to fully open. With only seconds remaining and almost no altitude left to work with, Holmes realized his chances of survival were rapidly disappearing. Looking directly into his helmet camera, he recorded what he believed could be his final moments. Then the impossible happened. Traveling at tremendous speed, Holmes crashed into a dense patch of blackberry bushes. The thick vegetation absorbed enough of the impact to dramatically improve his chances of survival. Against all odds, he lived. He suffered a punctured lung, a broken ankle, and other serious injuries, but emergency responders were able to get him to the hospital alive. Doctors later treated injuries that would have been impossible to survive under slightly different circumstances. The helmet camera captured the entire ordeal—from the parachute malfunctions and uncontrolled spin to his farewell message and eventual impact—making it one of the most remarkable survival videos ever recorded.
