My mom also hoarder and over decorate her house and when I became a homeowner i kept my home so neutral not over decorated and I throw stuff on the spot and my mom gets upset always with the “what if you need it” I had to discuss this in my therapy session and I had a talk with my mom I would get so overwhelmed with the over decorated house and just hoarding when I was little. I gave her boundaries.

You could move it all to storage and give your family say 3 months max to get it sorted. Keep only essentials in the house. Every weekend you go and sort and sell. It could be an easy way to get the junk sorted.

It's so true that having too much stuff makes it so you end up buying things you already have, because you can't find anything. I helped my bestie deep clean and organize her (tiny) apartment, and we found multiples of all of her essentials.

Try a simple rule with his “just in case” items: if he can get it for under $20 and can be replaced in 20 minutes- let it go. Or, get a bin for each “just in case” category (I.e. crafts, kitchen stuff, etc.) and once that bin is full, no more stuff can be added to it until something is taken out
