ER night nurse here! It is a difficult change especially if you’re a routine person. Instead of working with the specific time for each thing, make your schedule by hours. So get your 8 hours of sleep and then start your routine from your wake up time. It’s just shuffling your schedule to a different time. Let yourself rest! On days off I try and get to sleep a bit earlier so I have some of my next day to live. It’s not easy but it’s doable!

Eat healthy stay fit , it gets more difficult as you get older . Everyone struggles, , keep hydrated , some days will be a struggle as well as evenings , yet you will adapt a little , as you get older you need less sleep

Restivet. It’s over the counter. I have 1/2 tablet to have a good 3 hour nap pre night shift. Then a full tablet in between nights. I go straight to bed when I get home and get about 6-7 hours now. With out it I was only getting 3 😳

Try and get a nap in. And please make sure you’re eating properly while on shift as this can also lead to being sluggish when I’m on if I’m not eating and sleeping properly

Heyyy fellow vet student here!! I work as a casual night nurse and all that works for me is just getting a 1-3 hour nap in before the shift and then the next day I sleep in as much as I need. If i’m working again the next night I usually won’t need an arvo nap if i’ve slept in enough 😇

my morning shifts are either 3:45am - 1345 or 4:15am - 1415 and my afternoon shifts are either 10:45am - 2130, 11:15am - 2200 or 12:30 - 23:15. I work in aviation screening on a rotating roster (obviously😅) and i’ve been doing shift work for 4 years, you don’t get used to it😔

I’m an ER vet and I only work nights now (3x 12hr shifts per week). My routine and sleep schedule is a bit out of whack- something even I still need to work on haha. But I absolutely love working nights!!!

I used to work overnights 9-7. I would sleep as much as possible right before shift start. I found it better for my mental health to have daylight hours within my schedules so by finishing work at 7 and going to sleep at midday I still had hours to see friends, walk the dog and feel a bit normal. Coffee and energy drinks work wonders, pull down all blinds an hour before you sleep too!

ECC vet nurse! Honestly caffeine and trauma keeps you going during the shift. I either do a 6pm-6am or 8pm-8am 3 nights in a row. Get as much sleep as you can prior to the shift (take magnesium or whatever helps). I go to the gym 3hrs before my shift (never after because ya girl has no energy after haha).
