My take is that you kind of get a hint of the shallow side by looking at the end of the hall. if the hall wall is at the end of the building, odds are that you are at the shallow end,especially if the hinges on the door are on the right side of door. Doors usually open into the deep side.

doors should be taken from the door handle side, typically eliminating that situation. doors will typically swing to the nearest wall.
