Whether it is considered a ‘pie’ is an interesting question. I’m from Yorkshire and a shallow pie, usually made on an enamel plate, would not have a bottom pastry, and would be referred to as ‘plate pie ’ - only deeper pies would have a pastry bottom and simply referred to a a pie. I appreciate this may be highly regional, or indeed sub regional - a bit like the Breadcake, Roll, Barm, Teacake debate…

we used to call gravy browning black jack in the army and we made it ourselves its sugar and water cooked until it's black adding water a bit at a time once made it has no flavour at all but good for colouring sauces, gravies and stews 😁 banging looking pie mash n peas.
