Yes Hans Christian Andersson was Danish, but the story is not set in Denmark, its barely set in our world. So the mermaid herself isnt "danish" in any other way than that her original lines were written in danish

poland also has a mermaid - the name warsaw comes from combining two names - wars (the fisherman) and sawa (the mermaid). it's a very popular theme so idk why people are so pissed off

Denmark had colonies in the Caribbean... so the remake is a more accurate depiction of the story. Ariel was Caribbean, flounder in the original Disney movie was Jamaican.

Denmark actually had colonies in the Caribbean (then called Danish West Indies now known as US Virgin Islands) at the time that Hans published the little mermaid, so you can say it very much is still “Danish”.

Halle also just brought nuance and added depth to the character of Ariel. You could see and hear the desperation she was feeling during “Part of Your World.” And beyond that, how beguiled and enamored she was whenever she was on land and in Eric’s library. I personally do not believe there was anyone else who could’ve played the part so well. Her acting and vocals were beyond brilliant.
