Some people miss their flights. Others apparently decide to take the airport equipment for a joyride. A 26-year-old passenger waiting to board a Delta Air Lines flight to Seattle was arrested Tuesday, October 6, after authorities say he managed to get onto the restricted airfield at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California. And what happened next sounds like something straight out of Grand Theft Auto. According to airport officials, the passenger walked through an access door near the terminal, triggering a security alarm. But instead of stopping, he allegedly climbed into an Alaska Airlines airport tug — one of those small vehicles used to move equipment and baggage around the airport. And drove off. Authorities say he drove the tug from Gate 12 toward Gate 7 before crashing into another airport utility vehicle. You’d think that would be the end of it. Nope. Police say he then attempted to take an American Airlines lavatory-service truck. Yes, the truck used to service airplane toilets. Apparently, the first stolen vehicle wasn’t enough. Airport police eventually took the man into custody, and he was transported to a hospital for evaluation. Officials say the incident happened around 5:30 p.m. and involved multiple airlines’ ground equipment. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported in the initial coverage. The passenger’s identity and the full circumstances surrounding his behavior had not been publicly established in those reports. The alleged vehicle thefts remain accusations, not convictions. And before anybody asks, no, stealing an airport tug is not an alternative boarding procedure. So here’s the real question: How does a passenger manage to get onto an active airport ramp, drive off in one vehicle, crash it, and then attempt to steal ANOTHER before being stopped? And of all the vehicles at an airport… why the toilet truck? Follow for the next bizarre airport crime and WTF news update. #JohnWayneAirport #DeltaAirLines #AirportSecurity #WeirdCrime #CaliforniaNews
