so if repatriations are basically paying unpaid labour, w couple of things. 1. do you calculate at today's wages rates or tue rates at the time. 2. do you deduct the cost of housing/food etc?

Slavery is a terrible thing, but the fact remains that it is something which was unfortunately endemic for millennia; the vast majority of our ancestors would have had difficult lives, and if we could look back far enough it’d be unlikely for anyone to not have even the most tenuous ancestral connection to slavery in some way. Looking closer to home: the Roman Empire, Viking raids, the Norman conquest… where exactly would one draw the line? The fact is: you can’t. But what I do know, is that Wilberforce worked tirelessly to have the practice outlawed, and the British played a pivotal role; the Royal Navy fleets were instrumental in their plight – and at GREAT cost. We have done more than enough as a nation…. Pandering to a divisive rhetoric like this is not at all constructive (especially when there are so many people *ACTUALLY* enslaved right now around the world ! 😥)
