Even before they were locked into the play-in tournament, they knew they were headed there and would have to win two games to grab an unlikely playoff spot. So, they prepared for a two-game season. And the mission, in their eyes, is only half-finished. The Warriors — along with Charlotte, Orlando and Phoenix — will be in win-or-go-home matchups Friday as the play-in tournament comes to a close and sees two teams grab the last two available spots on the playoff bracket. Charlotte goes to Orlando, Golden State to Phoenix. Game 1s — at Detroit in the East, at Oklahoma City in the West — await Friday night’s winners. “This is literally it,” Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said. “This is it.” Golden State used a 41-23 run over the final 9:49 to close a comeback road win over the Los Angeles Clippers, turning a 13-point deficit into a 126-121 win and keeping its season alive. The Warriors hit six more 3-pointers than the Clippers did in that deciding stretch, and those 18 points were exactly the difference over the game-ending run. The NBA and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) have agreed, in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), that Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham and Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Dončić are eligible for all annual awards for the 2025-26 NBA regular season. Cunningham played in 63 qualified games due in part to missing 12 games as a result of a collapsed lung that was diagnosed on March 17.  Dončić played in 64 qualified games due in part to missing two games to attend the birth of his daughter in Slovenia. The NBA and NBPA agreed that, taking into account the totality of the circumstances for Cunningham and Dončić, each player qualified for awards under the extraordinary circumstances provision in the CBA. Additionally, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards, who played in 60 qualified games, filed an extraordinary circumstances challenge under the CBA, seeking award eligibility before an independent arbitrator.  Edwards’ challenge was denied and, as a result, he is not eligible for annual awards for the 2025-26 NBA regular season. Keep your eyes on: The response from Paolo Banchero This hasn’t been a step-up season from Banchero, more like a step-aside. Much was expected, less was received. He failed to make the All-Star team, saw his shooting efficiency tumble and never quite seemed in sync. Also, he was mainly invisible against the Sixers a few nights ago, with six turnovers and seven baskets and never loomed large. Well: Orlando has a big investment in him. He’s properly categorized as the franchise player and certainly has the skills for that; it’s just a matter of raising his game, especially in these situations. As a big man who moves freely and brings confidence, Banchero is capable of having a big night against the Hornets — and being the most impactful player on the floor — which Orlando desperately needs. Key matchup: LaMelo Ball vs. Jalen Suggs The NBA fined Ball $35K for his “unnecessary and reckless contact” against Bam Adebayo in Charlotte’s win on Tuesday. In these situations, players tend to regroup and deliver a strong effort if only to do right by their teammates. For all of his basketball faults — spotty shot selection and questionable decisions — Ball is a pure player. He doesn’t shy from the moment and in fact gravitates toward decisive situations, which was evident in his game-winning shot against Miami right after making mistakes. Suggs has a reputation as a good defender although he and his team haven’t always stepped to that line this season.
