@salaha.ashraf: the internet has a way of romanticising marriage but no one really talks about what it actually feels like. in four years i’ve learnt more patience, self-awareness, and comfort with being challeneged than in my whole lifetime haha but it’s important we talk about it and share a real-life (not online) marriage involves 🤎 #marriage #expectations #reality early marriage lessons adjustments married couple relationship growth communication self awareness @Odysea @polene_paris @fredbakery

I’ve been married 10 years and have never understood how you loose your independence? Like what suddenly changed when you signed a piece of paper?

Out of interest were you together very long/ did you live together before you got married? No shade I just wonder if some of these would come up before if you’ve lived together!

Being happily married for 7 years and living together for 10, I agree with all of this. I see a lot of people disagreeing about losing independence but it is true. Instead of making plans and doing whatever you want, you now need to coordinate schedules and consider the other person’s opinions/feelings. When kids are involved this becomes magnified x10

How is this different from being in a committed long time relationship?

I think your marriage experience will differ so much based on race, sexuality and spiritual beliefs. So no shade here, but my experience has been quite different. Thankful for your vulnerability and sharing your perspective! It’s so important for folks to know that marriage is not only shaped one way, but many ways, and lots of them are filled with love, beauty and growth. Many blessings to you and yours as you continue this journey!

Thank you for this, I tend to overthink a lot and slides 2,3 and 6 hit hard because I felt like no one else understood it and that something was wrong w me. Thank you for making me feel seen🥹🥹

honestly even just being in a long term relationship of 6 years i feel all of this. it’s definitely a rollercoaster of emotions to understand it all and make sense of it but it’s helped me grow so much as a person

Some people are taking this negatively but I don’t see anything negative about being self aware and still choosing this person. That’s what love is. ❤️someone said don’t get married…? Because of these few things? lol marriage is the best thing that ever happened to me. I’ve never felt more seen and cared for.

Idk why “losing your independence” triggered so many people. Maybe reframing it to considering another person with every decision is more acceptable. Marriage is ONE. That’s a part of marriage. That doesn’t mean stop your whole life it’s just adding an extra step behind it. 💕✨

I see a lot of people arguing your points but as an only child, who knew my husband for 7+ years as friends before dating then marrying, I definitely relate a lot to the loss of independence. I have always enjoyed being alone and although I love spending time with my husband, learning to consider someone else when making decisions or having to figure out how to still find time for me after marriage was a difficult change. Your marriage will 100% go through ebbs and flows, don’t let anyone make you feel bad for having these experiences, they are real and valid.

It’s a shift from independence to interdependence and that can be difficult if the only person you’re used to consulting is yourself, it’s a learning curve.

I will say this over 1,000,000 times. Be each other's best friends. When you can laugh with someone and you "get" each other, even when the romance fades, especially at hard times, you can embrace the friendship and then slowly come back to the romance. He's truly my Best friend. 💜

We appreciate the honesty so much. Everyone’s always striving to perform perfection. But realistic conversations like this are what can help navigate marriage 🫶🏽

Thank you for sharing this. I feel this post 100%, and we lived together for 9 months before marriage. I can’t explain what changed, but there is definitely a shift. Maybe it becoming really REAL? I don’t know. It’s a learning curve and I have definitely learned a lot about myself on this new journey 🥰

I agree with your last slide that marriage is intentional and having a “happy” or “successful” marriage is definitely a choice you have to make daily and a huge sacrifice ~ it’s putting someone’s wants and needs before your own in a society where self love, care, and independence are constantly being prioritized

did you have an arranged marriage? because I think many long term relationships go through these too maybe except the financial one depending on whether you’re living together or not
