i hated school because of this. was so excited to learn but it felt like if i ever showed excitement for it i was judged not only by other students but BY THE TEACHERS TOO! only 2 of my teachers ever got excited with me and called on me a lot and i remember them almost 10 years later so well because i felt like i was actually encouraged to learn

Back in 2nd grade, my parents were called into a meeting by my teacher and were told I was doing my work too fast. From there my teacher created an extra work folder that was just annoying busy work. I got so tired of it that I started doing things slower or just not doing them at all, and that’s grown with me all the way to now in college. My actual speed of doing work hasn’t been affected, however it did create a horrible trend of procrastination. I’m of course working towards fixing that but still, in school you were given accolades for being mediocre, given attention for being worse then average, and punished or ignored for being above average. The school system needs a reform tbh

public school is about enforcing social obedience, not about education.

Do you think this same feeling applies when professors slow down the pace of a class to accommodate for other students? I had this conversation with my statistics professor and I admitted to him that I felt like this class was moving incredibly slowly and he admitted to me that we were FOURRRR lectures behind his other classes! And there are three to four weeks left in the semester!! I’m glad that other people are learning at the rate they need but consequentially I haven’t been showing up to said classes. What’s the point when we’re going to go over classwork that I’ve already finished for the entire lecture? I feel like there are better ways to be accommodating towards everyone.

its my experience that when one student is taking the opportunity to ask and answer questions, it emboldens other students to do so as well.

for some reason math used to click so easily for me, after learning it once i could solve anything and never got lower than a 95. so i stopped listening to the teacher’s lectures since it didn’t stimulate me mentally and instead of recognizing me or even giving me more challenges/extra credit on the side my teacher punished me 😭 at one point she completely took my desk away and i had to sit awkwardly in the back of the class. I was a junior in HS mind you…i’ve hated math ever since then stopped trying and now my skills are gone :’)

I think on the other side of the scale, as in being slower and having a hard time understanding, is similar! I was always forced to move faster than I was ready to and berated for not getting it. This new perspective really makes me think that maybe 1-2 teachers for like 20+ students is not ideal in any way for learning.

I think if public education had better funding, there would be more resources to address each students' needs, rather than aiming for a level playing field

I was reading chapter books by the third grade at home, but there was a whole section of the library I wasn't allowed to touch because I was grade three and they were "too advanced". I read college level a year later.

I get this, but also the more you answer the less others will. The teachers job is to make everyone feel comfortable to answer. They can’t do that if the same person answers half the time. I used to also try to answer everything, but once I started to answer only once or twice during class, I noticed that an array of people that never raised their hand before were answering and participating. I’m still trying to find the balance between taking over the conversation and not stifling myself, but I think just trying to see it as a conversation between everyone in the class is the best way to see it.

The amount of times I’ve been told this, and now it’s often that I get behind on lectures/concepts in college, not learning/working on them until the week of the exam💔 Also, as someone who is very introverted, I feel like this has also discouraged me from asking questions and participating in my stem related courses
