In 1706, in the Kingdom of Kongo, she stood up and said what could get you killed: that Jesus was not a white European, that heaven was not a whites-only neighborhood, and that God did not belong to Europe. She called out the missionaries who claimed to be saving African souls while helping soften people for conquest, using the image of a white god to control Black bodies and take African land. Kimpa Vita preached that God spoke Kikongo, walked African soil, and loved Black people without needing a European face. Her message spread like wildfire. They arrested her, tied her to a stake, and burned her alive at just 22 years old, while the same men who preached “love your neighbor” watched the flames rise. They called her a heretic, a witch, a problem to be erased. But history remembers something very different.
