@demeesterelena: Why I didn’t get a PhD… If anyone wants more details I’ve written a guide: pipettes and paychecks, linked in my bio. I talk about my experience, compare the different degrees and include my actual resume. #Science #womeninstem #phd #biology #scientist
I did a PhD, and I can confirm it was a very stressful experience haha. I don’t regret it because I made some amazing friends. But I am definitely very honest when people ask me about it and if they should do one 😅.

Only academic scientists need to do a PhD. If you pursue a scientific career in industry or business or finance or marketing or management or bench science you do not need a PhD.

How’d you get a bench work job in industry with only a masters?

My bf just got promoted to a staff research engineer/scientist in biotech and he has his BS only. However he’s worked at this same company for 5 years and he’s said the same thing that you said that if he moved jobs he would hit that wall again

But also, consider doing a PhD program and leaving with a terminal master’s if you hate it because…it happens to be cheaper

Thank you for being honest and taking about this in our over achieving culture! I’m a physician so our PhDs naturally occur a bit later (during or right after residency) and we usually get paid nothing (you do it parallel to your main job!). I got offered one some years ago, accepted and realised right before starting that it would make me miserable and backed out one day before starting. Oooh they were not happy about it!!! but I never looked back. There’s definitely a glass ceiling in academia but I turned to more clinical work and it has been great (I even got promoted). I’m 37 now and no regrets!! Everyone has their own arch and needs.

Can you share what you can do in research with master. From what i know you cannot do your own research but can do the data collection, experiments, etc right?

That timeline is why I applied abroad! In Germany, they expect you to have your master’s and your PhD is restricted (wild!) to 3-4 years. We’ll see how it works out, I start in July 😅 Much love to you on your journey! 🖤

What can you do without a PhD or a master though… I have over 3 years of full time research experience and a bachelors degree but I am having a hard time finding a job that will pay more than 25an hour…

would you say the it would be a lot harder if you only have a bachelors and not a masters? i’m thinking of going into more industry based roles rather than research

Thank you for making this video. I feel so much external pressure to do a PhD but my masters has been so so stressful and anxiety inducing. I’m scared of the glass ceiling but I know a PhD would stress me out probably more than I can handle. I like hearing about the benefits of the no PhD route

I’ve been at my company for 7-years and while there’s no glass ceiling yet, I do worry that there will be one eventually and will I be at an age then where then I won’t want to go back to get a PhD. Thus, should I just go back now? Always a tough decision!

I’m in the middle of my microbiology PhD. I don’t know how to job search for industry positions when I graduate. What do you suggest? A lot of positions are more MLS when I search.
