Well fun fact!!! in the Chinese version he actually calls her dragon li. Which is an actual cat breed in china. Known for being fierce and energetic and believed to be descended from a mountain cat!! So for English users they figured that kitten would suit American audiences better. (Personally I still think dragon li would be super cute in English.)

I used to find all pet names cringe, but now Kitten, Cutie, Pipsqueak (this one truly surprised me as something I now crave), or a character from another game using Hondje (Dutch for puppy), love them all

It's because he doesn't say it in a degrading way, rather it's in a fond and loving way. When he calls us "kitten" it's him showing how fond of us he is. He also sees us as a kitten and he loves cats. He constantly takes care of the strays. I used to cringe at it but now I fully love it cause I just find it so sweet🤣🥹
