@tumbletwitch: Kicking off my new account with slightly unhinged ways I'm reducing our food waste and grocery bills in 2026. I've always been frugal, but lifestyle creep had indeed crept in in 2025, so I am now on a mission to reduce my monthly groceries from £1200 per month to £300. Can I do it, who knows... but I'll share the journey anyway.
Frugal? That’s basic not wasting… I don’t understand…

Not unhinged. I buy my shopping through Quidco, then use Klarna as they both give money back. So I spent £100 at Asda and I’ve got about £12 cash back. I pay full price through klarna btw, not on tick.

why would you open a bottle of maple syrup to pour part if it into another bottle just to still store them both in the same place? Why not use it straight out of the bigger bottle?

When I was a student, I worked in an Italian restaurant. One day, I noticed some stale bread in the basket and was about to throw it away when the owner nearly had a heart attack. He stopped me immediately and said, NEVER EVER throw away bread, unless it’s moldy! Then he showed me all the ways stale bread could still be used. If the baguettes were whole, he would run them quickly under the tap and place them in the oven. They came out tasting as freshly baked. For sliced bread, he would toast it in a pan with olive oil, then top it with cherry tomatoes and garlic to make delicious bruschettas that he served as complimentary appetizers. Sometimes he cut the bread into cubes to make soup or salad croutons. And when it became too dry, he blended it with dried herbs and garlic to make the most flavorful breadcrumbs for breading meats. After that day, I never threw away bread again 🥰 He taught me the value of food and how versatile it can be, I have never forgotten that lesson 🤗❤️

This is definitely unhinged....don't judge lol. My kids don't eat the skin on baked potatoes 😳 so I save them, spray them with oil and cook in the oven or deep fry them and have them as loaded potato skins...🫣🤣

I add red lentils to all my mince dinners - make sure it’s well cooked down. No one notices and meals go further

These are great, but I have one more for you to consider: freezer ziplock bag to store away all your veggie scraps, and eventually use for broth! All my veggies scraps *that are appropriate for making broth* go in mine- carrot tops and skins, anything leftover from bell peppers, any items that seem like they’ll turn before I can use them, etc. I love it!

Food is very expensive now and we are a very wasteful generation. These are great ways to make sure we are making our food go further!

You can rinse the honey or sugar containers with tea. You'll have a sweetened tea, and a jar ready to wash, no residue.

crazy that this is unhinged, I grew up doing this because every dollar saved means something fun in the future. I also save all my veggie scraps and meat bones in the freezer and when I run out of space I make soup broth.
