Just to clarify, the three financial statements mentioned are not listed in order of importance or in any particular order. As accountants, we can all agree that non accountants know the balance sheet more than the other financial statements. The fact is that no financial statement is more important than the order because they are prepared for users to make decisions and the decision that a user of the FS wants to make is what determines which statement is the most important to him at that point. Some will say statement of cashflows but it depends. However, the income statement is the starting point of preparation from the trial balance. This is because the end point which is the profit for the year goes into the statement of financial position. It also goes into the statement of cashflows if using the indirect method. The statement of changes in equity also facilitates the easy preparation of the balance sheet because it shows final totals of equity after all adjustments. The notes is last of course. Naturally

I wouldn't expect a qualified accountant to be asked about these basic theoretical questions. it is quite patronising and condescending. Basic questions are usually around, telling them what you currently do, how you manage difficult situations and deadlines. What you consider to be your key strengths and weaknesses. Also, your knowledge about the business or industry you just applied for. The interview panel can choose to throw a work scenario at you such as how do you close down a month end, technical knowledge such as your knowledge of a key accounting standard etc.

simply balance sheet or financial position is the financial statement where their assets and liabilities of a given entity, comprehensive income is the financial statement which shows the financial performance of the entity and cash flow statement is the financial statement that shows the incomes of the given entity.
