I use my smartwatch as an extension of my phone, notifications, alarms, music player and controls, to control my IoT devices, calls, and well, sleep tracking is nice to have I get it why someone could say they're useless tho, but I like to wear mine, it's useful sometimes and it looks good (galaxy watch 8 classic btw)

If your goal is fitness, I’ve heard the Garmin is a good choice. I personally use the apple watch because I like the smoothness with messages, calls, music etc.

I switch to a Casio F-91W watch. Best watch I’ve owned. The Apple Watch was heavy, the touch screen would randomly stop my timers and I need to carry around another charger.

Otterbox cases are a non-negotiable for all of my phones. They are pricey at $50ish (I get the commuter) but I’ve never had a phone smash or break. Another thing that I always spend $ on is a good screen protector that doubles as a privacy screen.
