@iamwillatherton: Having a great family dog isn’t just about picking the right breed. That’s part of it… but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. You also need to train your dog to behave appropriately around children. And just as importantly… you need to teach your children how to behave around your dog. Respect. Boundaries. Calm interactions. Because most problems don’t come from “bad dogs”… They come from situations that weren’t managed properly. Putting a dog under too much pressure… Allowing behaviours that shouldn’t be allowed… Or taking unnecessary risks. Standard Poodle is the perfect breed for us……..Happy, athletic, curious, food motivated, loves to work, loves to swimming and retrieve, and can chill out and nap like a professional. I may be crazy, but the ever popular Lab and Golden Retriever are tooooooo needy for me. Seem to have not a lot of chill and so much separation anxiety. The ones I have met anyway.

I have always have flat coated retrievers . I had them from when my children were little and still have one now I have small grandchildren . They’re great for family life BUT I never leave a dog and a child alone . My dogs are always trained and the children are always trained how to be around them
