MODERN WOMEN ARE THE BEST — HERE’S WHY A lot of men romanticize women of the past, but sometimes what they’re actually romanticizing is women’s labor. Cooking. Cleaning. Raising children. Managing the home. Supporting a man’s career. Staying because economic independence wasn’t always as accessible. Men needed women differently. But that’s exactly why I appreciate modern women. Modern women increasingly have their own education, careers, money, interests, ambitions, communities, opinions and identities. And when a woman doesn’t need a man simply to survive, something interesting happens: She gets to desire him. That’s a completely different relationship. If you choose me while having the ability to live without me, your choice carries a different meaning. We’re no longer together simply because we need each other’s traditional labor. We can actually ask: Do we enjoy each other? Can we have incredible conversations? Can we expose each other to new ideas? Can we travel, create, laugh, build, experiment and grow together? Modern relationships have the opportunity to move beyond “What can you do for me?” toward “Who can we become together?” That doesn’t make women of the past lesser. They navigated the realities available to them. But I don’t want a woman dependent on me so I can feel valuable. I want a woman with options. A woman with a world. A woman with skills. A woman with personality. And then, with all those possibilities available to her, she looks at me and says: “I still want to experience life with you.” That’s not a threat to men.
