@sheprettyp: Beyoncé - 106 & Park Interview September 2003 September 2003 was arguably the most pivotal stretch of Beyoncé’s entire career. Dangerously in Love had dropped in June and “Crazy in Love” with Jay-Z owned the summer with it being number one on the Hot 100 for eight weeks. The Fighting Temptations hit theaters September 19, 2003, making this her first major lead film role after Carmen: A Hip Hopera on MTV in 2001 and Austin Powers in Goldmember in 2002. So when she sat with AJ and Free, she was simultaneously a brand new solo star, a rumored but not confirmed girlfriend to Jay-Z, a film lead, and still technically a member of Destiny’s Child, which was on hiatus but had not broken up. Beyoncé has always treated the stage like couture week. Even back in the Destiny’s Child days, those custom Tina Knowles designed looks weren’t just costumes, they were thesis statements. Mama Tina was sewing those coordinated fits by hand, mixing fabrics nobody else was touching, and essentially running a private atelier out of Houston before the industry caught up. The “Bootylicious” era, the “Survivor” jungle looks, the cowrie shells, the camo, that was Tina building a visual language for her girls that no stylist could’ve manufactured. Beyoncé then leaned into the conversation about the making of “Baby Boy,” and you could tell this was a video she had real stories from. She started breaking down the choreography revealing she got cut up shooting that video. The sand on set wasn’t soft beach sand, it had charcoal mixed in, and every time she dropped down, rolled, did that floor work, it was scraping her skin raw. She was bleeding through takes. Cuts on her legs, her knees, her back. But she kept going. Frank Gatson had been with Beyoncé since the Destiny’s Child days, so he already knew her body, her instincts, how far to push her without losing that natural feel. Then Lavelle Smith Jr. stepped in and added that extra layer, the detail, the musicality, the moments in between the big moves. With collaborators like Frank and Lavelle, the vision is never just seen… it’s felt. #beyonce #beyhive #106andpark #bet #2003
