“I just don’t do politics.” Okay… but politics will absolutely do you. 💁🏼‍♀️ Our rights didn’t magically appear - we have them because people before us cared enough to fight for them so that politicians couldn’t ignore us. And when we look away or grow tired, that’s how rights get rolled back. That’s how governments get away with ignoring us. If you’re not an aristocrat, if you’re a woman, if you’re not white, not straight, not wealthy… or any of the above - every right we have came from people who DID do politics. People who organised, protested, voted - and even lost their lives so we could have basic freedoms. And despite all of those hard-won fights, we’re watching rights being stripped back across the world. Reproductive rights overturned. DEI under attack. Trans rights eroded. Conversations about leaving the ECHR - the very convention designed to protect ordinary people from government overreach. And it doesn’t stop at identity-based rights. Our social protections exist because people fought for them too: Our NHS. Disability benefits. Child benefit. Universal Credit. Housing protections. Consumer rights. benefits are always under threat - sickness can happen to any of us and I want to live in a society that supports the vulnerable, not punishes them. Even the everyday things like clean water, clean air, safe food, public transport, education - they didn’t just “happen.” Someone fought for those too. political apathy is so dangerous. When we “don’t do politics,” it’s an open invitation for politicians to listen to billionaires, corporations, and rich donors instead. It’s how public services get privatised. It’s how workers’ rights get stripped away. When we disengage, they get to make decisions without us. They will always put profit over people if given the chance. Voting is one of the few tools we have to fight for our rights and futures. I know politics feels exhausting and depressing - but opting out won’t protect us. Now is not the time to be neutral. Not when our rights - and our kids’ rights - depend on us caring.
