"Umoya Wami" by legendary Zimbabwean musician Lovemore Majaivana is a deeply emotional Ndebele folk and protest song whose title means "My Soul" or "My Spirit." The song also serves as a powerful social commentary on the struggles faced by ordinary families amid political and economic difficulties. Majaivana sings about his sister and father losing their jobs, highlighting the devastating effect of unemployment on families. He imagines a better future in which factories are built and people have stable employment. With reliable jobs and income, he suggests, families would once again have enough to eat until they are satisfied. Ultimately, "Umoya Wami" speaks to the heartbreak of displacement: people leaving their homes not because they want to, but because economic circumstances force them to search for "greener pastures" elsewhere.
