I want to talk about trust today. Not as an abstract idea, but as something I have had to wrestle with in real life. People close to me have said it many times: “You trust too much. People take advantage of that. You need to stop giving so much benefit of the doubt.” And I understand why they say it. I have experienced what misplaced trust looks like. In business. In relationships. More than once. Enough times to know the cost is real. But here is what I have also learned. I cannot simply switch trust off. Because for me, trust is not just a strategy. It is part of my faith. It is part of my character. It shapes how I show up in every room, every conversation, every decision. So, I stopped trying to trust less. Instead, I learned to trust differently. I learned to manage the impact of trust without shutting down the trust itself. Think of it this way: Trust is water. Impact is how far you open the tap. You do not have to turn the water off. You just need to be intentional about the flow. That shift changed everything for me. I started building the skills around trust that protect me when it is misplaced: Clear agreements. Early, honest conversations. Boundaries that do not require me to become cold, distant, or guarded. Because the goal was never to trust less. The goal is to trust well. This is the filter I now use: • Trust the person. Assess the pattern: Give the benefit of the doubt, but pay attention to what they do with it. • Match access to evidence: In new relationships, keep access appropriate. As evidence builds, access expands. • Build the skills that cushion impact: Clarity, boundaries, and early conversations are not defensive. They are responsible. • Amplify when trust is confirmed: When someone proves trustworthy, invest more. Do not hold back out of fear. Trust, on its own, is not the problem. Lack of skill around trust is. You do not need less trust. You need the capacity to make trust safe. I’m curious: How has trust shown up in your life and work? Has it cost you? Has it also opened doors you could not have accessed any other way? Let’s talk ✨🖤💛
