@kodekloud: MCP is dead. Or is it? Garry Tan said "MCP sucks." Perplexity dropped it. The CLI crowd is celebrating. But here's what most people are missing 👇 MCP loads every tool's full description into your context window BEFORE you even prompt. GitHub MCP alone = 50,000 tokens gone. That's not a protocol problem — it's a scaling problem. More context = more noise = worse agents. CLI wins because it's lean. But MCP isn't dead — it's just being used wrong. Your take? 💬 . . . #MCP #AIAgents #LLM #CLI #DevOps #AITools #LLMEngineering #ModelContextProtocol #AICoding #YCombinator #ContextWindow #DevTools #TechReels #AI2026 #MachineLearning
I literally just learned MCPs and now it's obselte lmao 😂😂😂😂

As if using CLI tools don’t need to be loaded into context. Jokes. Everyone bitching about tool context window like CLI tools don’t do EXACTLY the same thing.

How CLI tackle token problem ?

Basically, MCP loads everything, CLI only needs to load commands from shell of bash to do anything

Why isn’t it dynamic? Why not load an MCP when you need it, if it hasn’t already been loaded? Like skills?

Matt :
You can wrap a MCP in its own context container and all you need to do is provide a prompt and that container can do that specific task or tasks. Which is why MCP may not be the answer as other frameworks can do just the same. I’d say it’s not absolutely bad as it may have specific benefits in some cases but it’s likely to be a lesser impact than originally anticipated.

I've been using mcps with subagents, a small 2/3 lines in context lile "if you need to work with github ask the subagent". mcp is only loaded when it's needed.

You can use RAG + MCP to significantly reduce token bloat

How does the agent determine which cli command to use? Isn't that discovery also eating context?

MCP means token budget used on tool definitions. Most popular CLIs are familiar to the model

MCPs were a great idea but now with orchestration and multi agent flows, CLI and API are cheaper and faster. Why inject so much context so many times?

Sometimes I feel like it’s easier to just not pay attention to AI coding for a month and skip a ton of random back and forth. 😭

meh, don't think this is true. just mcps with progressive tool disclosure/minimal description would survive, others will optimize

Claude updated mid January to default to tool search so that you don’t get this context bloat. So I wouldn’t say this is an mcp issue but more of a mcp client issue

Just have agent convert some of mcp to cli. Not all can be done but at least there are some
