the website get ~2.75M unique visitors per month (as per webrate.com). most studies place bot traffic at ~50% so half that number. that gives us ~1.38M unique human visitors per month. its stil wayyyyy too much, but significantly less than 62M.

We’ve gotten to the point where ppl are upset about a fact check about a very serious issue. I hate when ppl fabricate about serious things that are already abhorrent if you just include what actually took place, like why do we need to “spice it up”? And then they try to gaslight you like you’re weird for being accurate or actually doing research on said thing. I feel the same way when ppl bring up “buck breaking”.

Also to add to your points, speaking as someone who self-hosts a site, the MAJORITY of hits on a website are bots that are scraping the internet.

It’s like how twitter views work. If someone is scrolling their feed and scroll past your tweet that counts as a view even if they didn’t read it.

Example: if you use AO3, you’ll know the difference between hits and kudos is vast. I wrote a fic with 1.5 mil hits and 25k kudos. Somewhere in between there exists the actual number of people who read the fic, but it’s probably closer to kudos than hits

At the same time it's also important to keep in mind that that is only one website, and far from the only place such information is shared.

So it would be like conflating the total yearly users reddit has sitewide with the amount of traffic one niche subreddit gets

A hit isn’t actually a visit. It’s a request made to the server. Could be a download, a click, loading a new css or html sheet. It measures server traffic.
