Back-to-school crap was everywhere. Kinzley should’ve been going into third grade. Ellie should’ve been headed back to preschool with a backpack almost as big as she was. And I was wandering around Target buying gear to go raft the Grand Canyon. The irony was not lost on me. Water had taken our girls. I still couldn’t hear or see water… let alone look at a river… without being wracked with nausea and panic. And here Tim and I were about to spend SIX DAYS on one. Not a leisurely float, mind you. Whitewater rafting the Grand Canyon. We didn’t wake up three months later and suddenly decide to be “resilient.” We had been doing this since DAY ONE. Not perfectly. Not without completely falling apart at times. But we already knew… We couldn’t control what happened. Our girls were dead. That was REAL. Nothing we thought, wished, prayed or screamed was going to change it. But there was almost always this tiny glimmer of a choice in what came next. And sometimes we had to fight like hell to find it. What is actually TRUE right now? What story is my brain adding? What can I DO from here? That’s how we ended up doing things that probably looked insane from the outside. Camping. Getting back near water. Eventually rafting the Grand Canyon. Not because we were trying to outrun grief. Grief was landing HARD. We were trying not to let what happened take more from us than it already had. So when I sat beside the Little Colorado watching people float through the rapids, nauseous and terrified… I watched Tim go. Then I heard myself say… “I’m going to try it.” I was trembling. Gasping. Everything in me was screaming to RUN. But I did it. Then I sat waist-deep in that water and SOBBED. THAT is emotional resilience to me. Not being okay. Not pretending tragedy wasn’t tragic. But looking for… and knowing how to find… the tiny piece that is still yours. Even when almost everything else isn’t. We had learned these skills… and had been practicing and teaching them in our business for a year… when the stakes were a hell of a lot lower. Then came the day they weren’t. You don’t get to decide when life is going to hand you something hard. But you CAN get better at what you do when it does. Learn it now. Practice it when the stakes are lower. Because you never know when they won’t be. Our next workshop is coming up. We’ll teach you some of the same core skills we’ve relied on through all of this… and how to start practicing them in YOUR life now. Workshop details are in the bio. And if you’re not ready for that, grab the free tool while you’re there and start with that. #Grief #EmotionalResilience #GriefSupport #LifeAfterLoss #FunctionalEmotionalResilience
