@holvek: Betelgeuse is a red supergiant in the constellation Orion located about 500–700 light-years away. It is roughly 700 times larger than the Sun and, if placed in its position, would engulf the inner planets out to about Jupiter’s orbit. Its mass is about 10–20 times that of the Sun, but it has already lost a lot of material, so its density is very low. Betelgeuse was once a hot blue star, but after exhausting its hydrogen, it expanded and cooled, becoming red. It is now in the final stage of its evolution and will eventually explode as a supernova, leaving behind either a neutron star or a black hole. #scary #astrophysics #Astronomy #facts

When Betelgeuse finally goes supernova, it won't just be a bright star—it'll be a celestial blockbuster. For several weeks, it could shine so intensely that you could read by its light at midnight, outshining even the full moon. And yes, it'll be bright enough to see clearly during the daytime.
But don't worry, the show is perfectly safe. At around 500 light-years away, we're far enough to enjoy the view without any danger. A supernova would need to be much closer—within about 150 light-years—to have any significant effect on Earth.
After the spectacular explosion fades, Betelgeuse's core will collapse. Depending on how much mass is left, it will form either an incredibly dense neutron star or a black hole, which will remain as a permanent monument to the star that once was.
It's incredible to think about, isn't it? Want to explore what it would be like to stand on a planet orbiting a star right when it goes supernova?
