The Roman government killed many of the early Roman Christians, then when they adopted Christianity, they created their own denomination that was modeled after their Government structure, with a ruling hierarchy, in order to keep religious people under control. They kept the old pagan traditions of the popular Roman pagan religions in order to be inclusive to the elite and non-christians, and ironically the early Christians ended up being the only group the Roman Catholic church ostracized and persecuted. Catholicism is the world's largest cult.
