this is so interesting! im an insurance agent in Ontario, Canada. at least at my company, underwriting will eventually request proof of repairs. photos, invoices etc. usually at the next renewal. and if the car is not repaired u/w will sometimes cancel/non renew. insurance is so different everywhere!

But if you later get in to another accident and damage the same part of the car insurance won’t pay for that bumper or whatever again because it had preexisting damage on it correct?

I got a check for my car and learned that fast. my dad ended up fixing it for a steak and it cost me $150ish for the part. 🤣 (Car paid off also) I was loving that sitting in my bank

Interesting. My previous insurance company wrote the check out to the repair company. My car was completely paid for. I mean, I had to get it fixed but my daughter who is an adjuster said that’s how most insurance companies do it now for that specific reason. Could be a state policy too.

Does it create a problem if you don’t fix the damage and you were subsequently in another accident? Does it become hard to sort out which damage was already paid out versus which damage is new?

Giving an example on the asterisk you added at the end. If you don’t fix the damage and that results in additional damages (corrosion, mechanical failure, additional damage to the pieces) as a result of the lack or timely repair; that additional damage is very likely not going to be covered.

insurance in the uk doesn't send you money. your car goes to their approved garage. you pay your excess then rest of bill goes to insurance

I saw a story on here of someone aged 19 who was not at fault for an accident and the at fault party's insurance wouldn't get them a rental because they weren't 21. How does rental work for younger people with the proper rental coverages??
