What do you want for dinner? I don't know. For the weekend? Whatever you want. From life? … I hear this. Not occasionally — constantly. The same answer for everything. And nobody calls it a problem — because "easy" looks so much like "healthy." She was 41. Successful. Organized. Three kids, a good marriage, a career she'd built herself. "I have everything I need," she told me in our first session. "I just can't seem to want anything." That's not contentment. That's the absence of desire — learned over years, one correction at a time. Here's the mechanism. You wanted things once. Loudly. At five, you knew exactly what you wanted every second of every day. Then came the corrections. Too much. Too selfish. Not realistic. Weird. Inconvenient. One by one, they edited your wants out of you — like typos in someone else's essay. And you adapted. Became "flexible." "Low-maintenance." "Easy to be with." But here's what nobody explains: your body didn't lose desire. It learned to pre-suppress it. You started editing your wants before they reached the surface — because the cost of wanting openly and being denied was too high. So now you optimize instead. You pick the safe option. The reasonable one. The one that won't cause friction or disappointment. You call it maturity. Wanting requires feeling. Feeling requires being in your body. And you left your body a long time ago — when you learned that what it wanted got you in trouble. Nobody stole your desire. You gave it away. Voluntarily. Because wanting felt dangerous — and not-wanting felt safe. But safe and alive are not the same thing. One small want. Stupid. Unreasonable. Entirely yours. Start there. Your body never forgot how to want. It just stopped believing you'd listen.
