@trevorcarroll_: Yes, autism is a disability (technically and legally speaking), and I also consider autism to be disabling for me personally. There are moments when my autism directly impairs my ability to function. Acknowledging this and calling it what it is is not a bad thing. When we acknowledge the totality of the autistic experience, including the disabling aspects, we’re better able to find support, accommodations, acceptance, and develop compassion for ourselves. Ignoring it doesn’t take away these challenges; it actually makes them even more difficult. #neurodivergent #autistic #autism #disability

I’m sorry but as a level one, we need more support than people realize.

Yes, I have autism and ADHD and it’s absolutely a disability. I’m functioning now, but with therapy and medication and there are some things/experiences I will never do because of my autism. And that’s ok - not everything is for everyone. And there were years when my brain was just debilitating and I could not move myself forward without major help.

That’s very frustrating. It IS a disability and interrupts our daily lives.

Yup! Disability is morally neutral. It doesn’t make anyone less worthy.

I don't get why people have such unnecessary negative view of the word/concept of disability. It doesn't mean a person is totally useless? It just means they may not have capacity to do somethings... It doesn't and shouldn't erase who they're as a person capable of other things and worthy of love...

Just because I can push through now with a cost doesn’t mean I’ll always be able to push through. Having Autism is realizing I may hit a wall someday just from regressing. That’s terrifying

The fact random people on the internet think it’s ok to tell autistic people that we aren’t disabled 🥲

I’m so over the “it’s not a disability, it’s a different neurotype” or “the only reason it’s considered a disability is because the world isn’t made for those brains”. Like it’s actually hard for me to identify what I physically feel. Half the time I don’t know I am hungry until I hear my stomach growl. Not to mention to be diagnosed with autism, you legitimately have to prove that it disables you. It feels very dismissive to have my very real struggles and issues be related to a personality quirk.

The words “shame” and “disability” do not ever belong together in a sentence like that…🙁

I consider autism as a disability.. like im 20 and still live with my mom, still trying to graduate high school, on income assistance because I cannot work (burnout makes me an unreliable employee), and I need more support than the average person... I will never be able to live a "normal" life and will likely never be able to be fully independent... i appreciate your response to this person's comment. autism can be disabling, denying such is dismissive and ignores the reality of those living with it, which does more harm than good.
