basically ATT and T-Mobile are GSM carriers while sprint and Verizon are CDMA. Most to all GSM carriers should work, so metro pcs, cricket should also work.

You're also forgetting the every single one of those carriers has subsidiary carriers also. so if it'll work on T-Mobile then it should work on mint and Metro in AT&t's is cricket so all of those carriers should work fine

You don't have to call in, You just pop in your SIM card. If the phone doesn't use a SIM card don't get that phone.
