My wife and I live in a studio. She’s from the suburbs, I spent half my childhood in the country. Here’s the thing- outside the city, you need more space to replace having the city. You need a yard to replace the parks, a big kitchen and dining room to replace all the restaurants and eateries, a vast living room den and playrooms to replace theaters museums nightspots. A home gym to replace ball courts, gyms, athletic parks, bike paths, running paths. You need cars and garage and all that goes with them because you can’t just walk where you need to go. Outside the city you need to recreate a city. If you live in the city, the city is your house. It truly gets very expensive mostly when people try to do both- have their own city and live in the city as well.

I have distinct memories of my parents and their friends talking about gas prices when I was growing up. They’d spend hundreds of dollars at the grocery store and at restaurants but I’d hear them taking about gas being $3.50 and I was like omg are we poor?? I didn’t realize it was per gallon or that adults simply just love talking about gas prices

My daughter said “I know we are are poor because our furniture touches the wall and I saw that on TikTok you aren’t rich unless you have enough space for the furniture to be in the middle of the room”. I showed her pictures of what our 850 square foot apartment could be anywhere else in the country.

Friend in elementary showed me a pic of her house in Jersey (right outside the city) when they moved to my small town. I was thinking oh geez, thank god they have a nicer house now. Now in my 40’s I’m aware that her small house was 10x what houses cost in my town 😂 you live and learn lol

I’m from suburbia and when my family comes to visit they are very concerned about when I’m going to move into a larger apartment 🤣 they can’t fathom raising two kids in our 2 bedroom
